AFVN Billy Williams - 1972

Billy Williams at AFVN DaNang

This is one of my shows from early April 1972 and one of my first at  AFVN.  It aired shortly after I arrived at  AFVN Da Nang from the Qui Nhon Vung Chua Mountain detachment.  The Da Nang C&W program ran from 4:05 until 6PM, the same time that Saigon's country show aired.

NOTE: The last song on this show was Mountain Berries (at about 23:20).  The later part actually came later when I was in Saigon and it got on the same tape somehow.

And the "Monkey Mountain Music Maker" jeeps that we used to breeze down the hardpan road, three or four miles, to Camp Tien Shaw and eat at the Navy Mess Hall.  Great food but heavily infested with career types.

The Whistler

The Whistler was a well done anthology series that I always thought was great programming.  He was on AFRTS starting in the 40s well though the 80s, off and on.  The Whistler was made into several movies.  It was even made into a television series in the 1954-55 season.

Tis is a 1962 rebroadcast of a 1955 show.   "Last Message" is the story of a retired gangster, trying to go straight, is located by a member of his old gang...with problems of his own.  Starring Lawrence Dobkin, William Conrad and of course Marvin Miller.

Chris Noel - 1967

Chris Noel brings home that much closer on this Date With Chris.  Vets still talk about the show after all of these years.  Chris toured war zones, stood up for the troops when it wasn't the easiest thing to do/  Today she runs a shelter for our homeless brothers.  Thank you!

Roger Carroll at the Hollywood Palladium

It's the best sounds in town!  Here's Roger Carroll with some 1968 fun.  Busy times, AFRTS show, KMPC, CBS and I'm sure a bunch of agency work.  Nice...

If Freedom Failed - 1951

"If Freedom Fails" continues to part two.  James Whitmore stars.  What could happen if the communists took over sports?  In the early 50s, there was a loto of programming like the "I Was a Communist for the FBI" and "I Lead Three Lives" .  This is the most thoughtful.

Chris Noel - 1967

It's 1967 and Chris Noel is back with another hour from home on A Date With Chris.  When she started the show there was a lot of middle of the road music.  In the 1960s the network played a lot of Henry Mancini.  As the years went on, it rocked but it was always some great radio.  Visit her website.

Roger Carroll - 1961

RC circa 1960 with music director Julie Rizzo

It's a jazzy get together with Roger Carroll.  It's fun to listen to shows evolve over the years.  Roger always a solid talent.  Almost two weeks without the Happy Hour?  Never again.

If Freedom Failed - 1951

In the late 1940s and 50s AFRTS took their mission to educate the troops very seriously and did several high quality command information dramas, usually with the biggest stars. These disks were generally retained by the stations to be broadcast multiple times.  In 1951, the had to explain the threat of Communism.  "If Freedom Failed" tells that story.
